Personal Statement
I am Dr. Alexander Afolabi Agoro, an academic scholar and dedicated professional in the field of Human Kinetics and Health Education, with a special focus on sport administration and management. Born on the 24th of March, 1972, in Konstanz, West Germany, and raised in Lagos, Nigeria, my professional journey has been shaped by a strong passion for the advancement of sports science and education. With over 25 years of combined academic and professional experience, I have remained committed to nurturing the next generation of scholars, athletes, and sports administrators through research, teaching, and service.
My academic foundation began with a B.Sc. in Physical Education from the University of Lagos in 1997. This was followed by an M.Sc. in Sports Management from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria in 2004, and ultimately a Ph.D. in Sport Administration and Management from the University of Lagos in 2019. These qualifications have equipped me with a deep understanding of the intersection between sports, health, education, and organizational leadership.
Since 2010, I have served as a lecturer in the Department of Human Kinetics and Health Education at the University of Lagos, where I have taught a wide range of post-graduate, undergraduate and diploma-level courses, including Sport Psychology, Coaching and Officiating, Information Technology in Sports, and Martial Arts.
My academic contributions extend beyond the classroom. I have co-authored scholarly articles published in both national and international journals, addressing key issues in sports marketing, youth fitness, injury prevention, and organizational behaviour in sport settings. My doctoral research explored the impact of advertising on consumer patronage and attitudes towards sports participation among undergraduates, reflecting my interest in how modern communication strategies influence sports development
Beyond publications, I actively seek professional development opportunities. In 2023 alone, I completed several international online training programmes through Coursera, covering topics such as team leadership, digital learning, global sustainable development goals, and survey analysis. These courses have enabled me to integrate digital tools and innovative strategies into my teaching and research, aligning with global trends in sports education.
As a Nigerian academic and fitness advocate, I am committed to promoting excellence in sports education, developing research that impacts policy and practice, and mentoring students to become leaders in their own right. My long-term vision is to contribute to the strengthening of sport management education and physical development frameworks in Nigeria and beyond, ensuring that they remain dynamic, inclusive, and globally competitive.
